WITW Weather Policy

At Wellness in the Wild Ltd, we believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing! Outdoor learning is at the heart of what we do, and we aim to run sessions in all weathers to give children a full, rich experience of the natural environment. However, safety always comes first, and there are circumstances where we may need to adapt or cancel sessions.

Our Approach to Weather

Everyday weather (rain, wind, cold, sun): Sessions continue as normal. Children are expected to come prepared with suitable clothing and footwear.

Extreme conditions: If weather poses a significant health or safety risk, sessions may be adapted, shortened, or cancelled.

When Sessions May Be Adapted or Cancelled

We will always assess conditions carefully and make decisions based on safety. Examples include:

High winds (above 39mph / Met Office Yellow Warning or higher): Sessions will be cancelled due to risk from falling branches or trees.

Thunderstorms/lightning: Sessions will be paused or relocated to a safe area until the risk has passed.

Extreme heat: Sessions may be shortened, moved to shaded areas, or rescheduled to cooler parts of the day. Extra water breaks will be provided.

Extreme cold or snow: Sessions may be adapted or cancelled if temperatures are dangerously low, or if travel is unsafe.

Clothing & Equipment

We ask that all children come prepared with:

Waterproof coat and trousers.

Sturdy footwear (wellies or boots).

Warm layers, hats, and gloves in cold weather.

Sun hats and sunscreen in hot weather.

Spare clothing will be kept on site where possible.

Communication

Families will be notified as soon as possible of any cancellations or changes due to severe weather.

Updates will be shared by email, text, or phone, depending on urgency.

If in doubt, please check our website or social media channels for announcements.

Review

This policy will be reviewed annually and updated in line with best practice, Forest School guidance, and weather safety advice.
